Most players try stretching, ice, and anti-inflammatories. Some help for a session or two. None of them change the mechanics and that is the problem.
Every time you play through it, the patellar tendon absorbs force it was not designed to handle at that angle. The small tears that build up between sessions do not resolve on their own. They accumulate. What starts as something you notice after matches becomes something you notice during them — and eventually something that starts deciding which days you play.
